Three Galena Favorites

Every Spring Ted and I make a point to head out to the small town of Galena, Illinois – one of our favorite day trips from Chicago. Ted and I first visited the historic town when we were in college and have many happy memories there. My favorite being when Ted proposed to me our senior year in college!

Over the long holiday weekend, Ted and I made the drive out on Sunday and had a perfect spring/summer day. The weather was warm, the sun was shining, and we spent the whole day outside!

Here are some of our Galena favorite places:
1. Peace of the Past

Books line the walls and antiques fill the entire store – what is not to like ! Whether you are a book lover (both new and old) or a collector of sorts you will find something unique in this store.

2. One Eleven Main

This is our favorite restaurant – we eat dinner here every time we visit. Galena is surrounded by hundreds of farms and One Eleven Main’s signature offering is that it serves only locally grown food. Everything tastes amazing and fresh !

3. House Hunting

Settled in the 1800s, Galena has many of its old original houses. Its a mecca of sorts for those who love old houses.  Ted and I love looking at the old homes and finding our “dream house.” We find a new one each time, our current favorite being the one below. Built in 1830 on two wooded and pasture acres. Does it not look perfect?!!

  1. This town is also one of our favorites. One of my favorite presidents Ulysses S. Grant lived there.
