Iced Matcha Espresso Latte

Everyone knows that I am a lover of all things matcha. The taste to me is so fresh and clean and I love the vibrant color. I even use it in desserts where I can.  Starbucks offers matcha drinks but the one that’s my favorite is not available in the United States. It’s the Starbucks Matcha & Espresso Fusion. It’s like the Starbucks version of a carmel macchiato with the espresso poured on top of the milk. I discovered it when visiting Bangkok, Thailand and fell in love. But the sad part is, its a drink they only offer in their Asian stores. So I’ve attempted to make my own and after a few tries think I have the taste combination right!

Matcha Espresso Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons matcha powder
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • sweet simple syrup (optional)
  • 2% milk
  • 1 shot of espresso *
  • ice

*Espresso machines are expensive and I know most people don’t have one (we got ours as a wedding gift). I’m not sure how this will taste topped with coffee instead of espresso but will give it a try in the coming weeks and update this post.

Matcha Espresso Instructions
  1. Mix two tablespoons of matcha powder and 1/4 cup of water. Whisk to dissolve the matcha in the water.
  2. Pour the matcha mixture into the bottom of your glass and then fill with your desired amount of ice.
  3. If you like things sweet, add a dash of simple syrup.
  4. Prepare your espresso shot
  5. Slowly pour your cold milk into the glass. I still haven’t mastered how to do this to get the pretty separation of the green matcha, white milk, and brown espresso but am getting better. The trick is to pour in the milk with the glass on an angle and pour really slow. I’ve also noticed milk with higher fat contents works better and don’t mix as quickly with the matcha.
  6. Top off with the espresso and enjoy!

For reference I used a glass that was big enough for one and a half cups (without ice). So the measurements above may vary depending on the size of your glass.

Look how tasty ! Like I said, I’m still trying to get the pouring part right so here are some pics of my attempts below! In all cases its delicious and full of caffeine. Enjoy!
